Located just over a mile away is the popular Drunken Duck, this upmarket inn has recently been refurbished and boasts a great variety of ales (including their own!), superb locally sourced food and a great atmosphere throughout the season. It's definitely not one to miss, though if you plan on eating, you're best to book in advance.
Slightly closer to home at just under a miles walk is The Outgate Inn. It's everything you could want from a local - good, reasonably priced beer, large portions and an open fire. It's the perfect place to catch a quick pint or fill up on some tasty pub food. Plus it's dog friendly - what more could you want!
There are also four further pubs in Hawkshead, so you won't be short of establishments to quench your thirst!
Grizedale Forest, is an unrivalled day out offering walking and cycling trails for all abilities. Named by The Telegraph as 4th best mountain biking route in the country, it offers "fabulous views, testing climbs and technical excitement" and with bike hire available and 1 mile from the cottage to free parking at High Cross (or 5 miles to the visitor centre) there's no excuse to miss this! The forest also plays host to the exhilarating ‘Go Ape’ aerial adventure course and fantastic sculptures.
Fancy getting on the water? Everything from motor boats to kayaks are available to hire at both Coniston, and also at Esthwaite water where you can also hire fishing gear.
There’s plenty to do when the heavens open in Ambleside including a cinema and climbing wall.
Alternatively learn about the history of the area at the local neo-gothic Wray Castle or further afield, the impressive 14th century Muncaster Castle with a hawk and owl centre open every day
And Peter Rabbit fans are spoilt for choice with the Beatrix Potter Gallery in Hawkshead and her 17th century farm, Hill Top House within a couple minutes drive.
The Lakeland Motor Museum at Backbarrow, houses a unique collection of over 30,000 exhibits - there's plenty to see.
